Set at the foot of Llanllwni Mountain, next to the school and two down from the village shop and post office, Tafarn Y Talardd in Llanllwni is a lovely village pub, serving locals, the community at large and those that visit this beautiful and unspoilt part of Carmarthenshire. Good beer and wines, tasty wholesome and homemade food and plenty of laughter is the Talardd´s recipe for success, all served up in a warm and welcoming traditional atmosphere.
We have four rooms, Bar Gwaelod with its slate-floor, traditional Welsh settles and wood burner (dog friendly) and adjoining Pool Room, Bar Top with its cosy open fire which leads into the light and airy Dining Room, which doubles up as an activities room, hosting many community events and our own monthly music, film and quiz nights.
John, Anne and staff are here to welcome you each day (12:00 to 2:30) and every evening (6:00 –›)
Trip Advisor describes the Talardd as a steakhouse and although our locally sourced steaks are top quality we are far more than a steakhouse. Grills apart, a lot of the meals served could be described as modern comfort food – we have casseroles, farm sausages and faggots alongside curries, stroganoffs and chillis and there are vegetarian options to most of these. We also have oven baked salmon and chicken served in our own delicious sauces, together with the more traditional fish, scampi, ham and lasagne. Children are well catered for too with many half portions of the main meals available for them.
“Blas y Dydd” or Daily Specials can be traditional like Shepherd´s Pie and Anglesey Eggs or Mediterranean/Oriental, to give our regulars a change. The highlight this summer was “Tywi Sewin” caught by the coracle men. The “piece de resistance” this autumn will be our “Raclette” cookers, for the ultimate sharing experience. The Talardd is as famous for its sweets as it is for its main courses. Like our main meals all are homemade and of the highest quality. You haven´t lived until you´ve tried Tizzy´s chocolate fudge cake, Cassie´s cheesecakes or Anne´s meringues! Cheese is often chosen as a savoury alternative to end a meal. The “Cheese board” at Y Talardd is a chance to showcase cheeses from Sir Gâr (with one Ceredigion cheese thrown in!). Caws Cenarth is represented by its Caerffili and the soft white Perl Wen, Carmarthenshire Cheese Company is represented by its Llangloffan White Cheddar and the Garlic and Chives Cheddar, together with the soft blue Boksburg Blue, whilst Teifi with Cumin is the immigrant from Bwlchygroes in Ceredigion! We are very fortunate to have such a choice of good quality, locally made artisan cheese. Coaches are welcome for which we have set menus, be it for a day trip out or a celebratory dinner. Our 3 course dinner party menu has a very wide choice, from which we ask parties to choose 3 starters, 3 mains (including roasts) and 3 sweets.
This summer we´ve started making our own preserves under the brand name ‘Tast Y Talardd’ and we also supply local self catering establishments with ‘Tast Y Talardd’ frozen ready meals.
Next summer........... who knows? Watch this space.....!!
John and Dan, the principal bar tenders at Y Talardd pride themselves in the way they keep their beer. The cellar is kept at a constant ambient temperature of 14°C, beer lines are cleaned religiously and the stock control is second to none. The turnover of beers, lagers and ciders is such that you are guaranteed a “good pint” at Y Talardd. We are a small country local and despite what it says in the Good Beer Guide 2015 the choice of beers reflects this - there is one “Real Ale” - normally “WARRIOR” by Llandeilo Brewers Evan Evans, especially suitable during the International Rugby Season!!
Bottled Ciders are popular – Kopparberg with the youngsters, Gwynt y Ddraig by more discerning oldies. There might only be a small select range of House Wines, but wait until you see the vast, eye catching range of malt whiskies!! The Penderyn malt whisky range is fully represented even down to (or should it be ‘up to’) the Limited Edition Bourbon Matured Single Cask. In all there are 38 malt whiskies to choose from. Come and see (or better still, sample) for yourselves.
We have an excellent range of other spirits and liqueurs, with a choice of 6 gins – the latest being the locally made artisan gin from Glynhynod Farm, the makers of Teifi Cheese. This summer the Talardd produced its own Elderflower Cordial for the first time, selling it in drinks such as gin and elderflower tonic and also in bottles under the brand name of “Tast y Talardd" At the end of an evening what better way is there to finish than with a platter of Carmarthenshire cheeses and a glass of port – or with a Welsh, Irish, Scottish, French, Italian......... liqueur coffee – they´re all here!!
Come and sample the delights of Y Talardd for yourselves but remember to book!
